The Albanese Labor Government is investing $1.9 million to safeguard captive threatened species from the looming threat of H5 avian influenza (bird flu). This funding is part of a broader $100 million investment to prepare for H5 bird flu, with $35.9 million dedicated to environmental measures. The initiative targets critical populations of native species, including the eastern quolls, New Holland mouse, helmeted honeyeater, and Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle, across the country. While Australia remains free from the serious and contagious H5 bird flu, this strain has caused mass mortalities in birds and some mammals overseas. Protecting captive species populations is crucial due to limited options for direct action in the wild. The second funding round, part of $5 million allocated to the Zoo and Aquarium Association, will support 26 threatened species across 21 facilities nationwide. Facilities receiving funding include Adelaide Zoo, Aussie Ark, Featherdale Sydney Wildlife Park, and many more.
