Can Zapping Our Brains Make Us Less Selfish?

A recent study published in PLOS Biology by cognitive scientists from East China Normal University suggests a potential solution. The researchers investigated whether transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) could encourage altruistic behavior.
In the experiment, 44 participants played the Dictator game, where one person decides how to split a monetary prize with another. The researchers used tACS to stimulate two brain regions: the frontal regions, responsible for understanding others' interests, and the parietal regions, involved in decision-making.
Surprisingly, the study found that altruistic behavior increased when these brain regions were gently stimulated. Participants were more inclined to offer more money to their fellow players, even when it meant they would receive less themselves.
Marius Moisa, a co-author of the study, stated, 'We were struck by how boosting coordination between two brain areas led to more altruistic choices.' This discovery suggests that by synchronizing these brain regions, we can enhance our ability to help others, even at a personal cost.
The research team has proposed several avenues for future studies, including monitoring brain activity during the experiment and exploring potential clinical applications for individuals with altruism-related disorders.
