The Controversial Comeback: Gervonta Davis' Next Move
The boxing world is abuzz with speculation about Gervonta 'Tank' Davis' potential return to the ring, and it's a story that has all the makings of a blockbuster. Despite a recent string of controversies, Davis remains a top draw, and his next move could be a massive leap in weight class.
Davis' last fight, a controversial draw against Lamont Roach Jr., left many fans questioning his undefeated record. Since then, he was set to face Jake Paul, but a civil lawsuit alleging violent behavior, battery, and kidnapping put a halt to that bout. The 31-year-old's legal troubles continued, leading to his arrest and the loss of his WBA lightweight world title.
But here's where it gets interesting. In a recent interview, Bill Haney, trainer and father of Devin Haney, revealed that Davis is still the top target for the WBO welterweight division. Despite never fighting above super-lightweight, Davis' name sits at the top of a list that includes the likes of Shakur Stevenson and Jaron Ennis.
"Tank is at the top of the list, with maybe Shakur next. Jaron Ennis is also up there. Conor Benn might be towards the bottom, but he's on there. Ryan Garcia is at number 10, and Brian Norman was also mentioned. Keyshawn Davis is another name that's been thrown around."
And this is the part most people miss: Davis would be undersized at welterweight, a significant jump in weight class. It's a risky move, but one that could pay off handsomely if he can pull it off.
The new WBA lightweight world title holder is expected to be crowned on April 11th, but legal issues between Golden Boy Promotions and Vergil Ortiz could delay that event. As for Devin Haney, the three-weight champion, he too has expressed interest in fights with some of the names on Davis' hit list, including Shakur Stevenson, Keyshawn Davis, and Conor Benn.
