Jared Young's Journey: From Exciting Prospect to Blocked by the Mets (2026)

Jared Young's future with the Mets seems to be hitting another roadblock.

Back in December, we reflected on Jared Young’s performance in 2025. It was a mixed bag, particularly at the major league level; however, many qualities that made him a promising minor league acquisition still stood out. His impressive statistics in Triple-A were noteworthy, his approach at the plate was commendable, and his contact metrics indicated he could serve as a valuable asset for depth. What I found particularly thrilling at that time was the apparent opportunity for Young to gain more playing time in 2026, allowing him to showcase his talents on the big stage.

However, since then, the landscape has shifted dramatically. The Mets have made some significant moves: Jorge Polanco was signed to take over first base duties, Bo Bichette joined the team to play third base in January, and Luis Robert was brought in to fill the center field position. With Carson Benge expected to get the initial chance at left field and both Mark Vientos and Ronny Mauricio still with the team, Young now faces a crowded situation that blocks his path to major league action. According to Roster Resource, it looks like he will start the upcoming season back in Triple-A.

On one hand, this development is undoubtedly a positive sign for the Mets. They have successfully acquired several strong players—each clearly more talented than Young—which strengthens their major league roster and adds intriguing depth to their minor league system. One can't help but feel grateful that the Mets of 2026 are in such a favorable position compared to the Mets of the 2010s, who struggled due to a lack of resources and foresight. Back then, they often had to rely on players like Young, without any solid backup plans in place.

Yet, part of me finds myself nostalgic for those earlier times. There was something truly special—almost magical—in convincing ourselves that a once-struggling veteran or a former top prospect could turn things around, and that the Mets were brilliant for picking them up. Perhaps it's just a sign of getting older, or maybe it reflects the current state of the world; it could even be a simple case of nostalgia. Regardless of the reason, I find myself yearning for that unique blend of optimism and denial that comes with fully investing as a fan in players like Young.

Putting aside my philosophical musings, it appears that Young will have a similar role this season as he did last year. He may face a limited opportunity before rising prospects from the upper minors—such as Ryan Clifford, Jacob Reimer, and A.J. Ewing—potentially push him further down the depth chart. Personally, I plan to continue believing in his potential and hope he gets the chance to prove my faith in him was well-placed.
