NBA: Lakers Coach JJ Redick Clarifies Viral Exchange with Luka Doncic, Emphasizes Strong Relationship
Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick addressed a viral incident involving star player Luka Doncic, clarifying that the exchange between them was a common occurrence rather than a sign of tension. The incident, which went viral, showed Doncic avoiding a fist bump from Redick as he walked to the bench, leading to a brief exchange of words.
Redick, speaking before the Lakers' 110-101 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, stated, "I don't know why it went viral. It felt very normal to me. I didn't think much of it at the time."
Doncic, who finished the game with 26 points, had been replaced late in the first quarter. The Slovenian player's attempt to avoid a fist bump sparked a brief interaction with Redick, who followed Doncic down the sideline. The pair exchanged words before Doncic took his seat.
Redick emphasized the positive nature of their relationship, stating, "He and I have a great relationship. I really value our relationship. And I think those things happen. Not every game, but they happen very frequently. It's a competition, and there's two guys here who are trying to win a basketball game and be on the same page about stuff."
Despite the viral exchange, the Lakers coach assured that the incident was a common occurrence in the competitive world of basketball. The Lakers' recent success, including a third straight win on Tuesday, has kept them in sixth place in the Western Conference standings.
The Western Conference leaders, Oklahoma City Thunder, defeated the Chicago Bulls, while the second-placed San Antonio Spurs thrashed the Philadelphia 76ers. In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons suffered a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the New York Knicks capitalized with a win over the Toronto Raptors.
