In a bold move to enhance the competitive landscape of golf, LIV Golf has announced significant updates to its competition structure and format for the upcoming 2026 season. This initiative highlights the League’s unwavering dedication to maintaining competitive integrity, fostering global expansion, and increasing the long-term value of team play within golf.
Kicking off under the lights on February 4-7, the 2026 LIV Golf League season will commence with the ROSHN Group LIV Golf Riyadh at Riyadh Golf Club.
NEW YORK – LIV Golf is thrilled to reveal its latest updates designed to elevate the standard of competition, emphasizing both individual and team excellence in what is considered one of the sport's most innovative formats.
These modifications come as a response to player feedback and insights from teams and stakeholders, aligning with LIV Golf's vision of becoming a premier global league focused on individual talent and teamwork.
"Our ongoing objective is to cultivate a league that advances the game of golf not just competitively but also commercially and culturally. The adjustments we’re making for 2026 aim to reward consistent performance, enhance team collaboration, and clarify pathways for players to secure their positions and advance within the League," stated Scott O’Neil, CEO of LIV Golf. "Transitioning to a 72-hole format, enlarging the field, implementing increased relegation, revising our points system, and boosting our investment in teams all follow the same philosophy: if you consistently perform well—both as an individual and as part of a team—your results matter. We believe this evolution will make LIV Golf more competitive, transparent, and ultimately thrilling for players, teams, and fans worldwide."
Here are the essential updates to the competition structure and format for LIV Golf in 2026:
UPDATED LOCK ZONE, OPEN ZONE AND DROP ZONE STRUCTURE
To better reward consistent high performance throughout the season, LIV Golf is rolling out revised competitive thresholds within the individual standings:
Lock Zone: This category now extends to the top 34 players in the standings, representing approximately 60% of the 57-player field, an increase from the previous top 24 players from 2022-2025.
Open Zone: Players finishing in positions 35-46 will now fall into this category, comprising about 20% of the field, a decrease from the 24 spots allocated during the previous seasons.
Drop Zone (Relegation): This section expands to include positions 47-57, which constitutes around 20% of the field and is an increase from just the bottom six players in previous years.
These modifications aim to heighten the stakes and foster a merit-based approach to entering the League, intensifying the competitive atmosphere throughout the season, reflecting the larger field size in 2026, and providing clearer performance benchmarks for the entire season.
ENHANCED POINTS SYSTEM (INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM)
The 2026 season will introduce a revamped points system that increases the total points available, awards points for all finishing positions, and places greater emphasis on top performers. This new structure is intended to more accurately represent consistent, high-caliber performances throughout the season while acknowledging individual contributions to overall team outcomes each week. Below is how the enhanced points system will work:
LEAGUE FORMAT
Enhanced Points System and Distribution
Moreover, the League is launching a new prize pool of $2.3 million for each event in 2026, designed to incentivize individual player performances among podium-finishing teams weekly. In total, the League will distribute a remarkable $470 million in team and individual prizes throughout its 14-event season, reinforcing LIV Golf’s commitment to establishing sustainable and valuable team franchises while recognizing every player's role in achieving team success.
72-HOLE EVENTS, EXPANDED FIELDS, AND INCREASED PATHWAYS
As previously announced, LIV Golf events will transition to a 72-hole format starting in 2026. This expanded approach aligns the League more closely with the broader professional golf calendar while retaining its unique tournament atmosphere and enriching the fan experience.
Additionally, LIV Golf has confirmed an increase in its field size for the season to 57 players, up from 54. This adjustment creates more avenues for entry into LIV Golf through five Wild Card slots, awarded based on performances in the International Series (top 2) and LIV Golf Promotions (top 3), thereby enhancing access and representation on a global scale.
These updates signal a pivotal advancement in LIV Golf’s journey, merging the League’s signature fan-centric experience with improved competitive credibility, broader opportunities, excitement, and ongoing investment in the enduring value of teams and players alike.
