Researchers from the University of New England in Australia conducted a study on European honeybee colonies, monitoring the effects of long-term exposure to PFOS. The results were eye-opening.
The study found that PFOS can accumulate in honeybee colonies, impacting the very foundation of their existence. It alters key proteins responsible for cellular function, leading to a decrease in body weight among the juvenile bees. This reduction in body weight indicates a smaller bee with compromised glands, including the hypopharyngeal gland, which is crucial for producing royal jelly to nourish future generations.
But here's where it gets controversial: PFOS, once widely used in firefighting foam and consumer products, can be found in contaminated dust, water, paint on beehives, crop protection products, and even pollen from plants growing in polluted soil and water. Bees, in their natural foraging behavior, inadvertently come into contact with these toxic substances.
